Jason Kohlmeyer, Lawyer, Author, Speaker

Jason Kohlmeyer is a Minnesota family law attorney with more than 25 years of experience representing men and women in divorce and custody matters, including high-conflict disputes. He writes this blog to help Minnesotans understand how family law works in practice and what steps to take next when the stakes are high.

Jason has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America from 2019 through 2025 and by Super Lawyers from 2012 through 2026. Earlier in his career, he was named a Rising Star from 2002 through 2011 and received an Up and Coming Attorney of the Year award in 2002 by Minnesota Lawyer. He has also presented continuing legal education programs for attorneys across Minnesota and nationally over the past 20 years.

Professional leadership

Jason is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (2011 to present) and a Master with the American Inns of Court (2008 to present). He served as a Member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates (2011 to 2013) and previously served as Chair of the American Association for Justice Criminal Law Section (2005 to 2006). He has also been involved with the Minnesota State Bar Association and the 6th District Bar Association. As well as being a Fellow from the ABA- Family Law Section to the ABA -YLD from 2004–2006.

Speaking and teaching

As well as being a former Adjacent Professor at Minnesota State University – Mankato, Jason has regularly spoken to attorneys and legal organizations on divorce law, trial preparation, client management, and family law practice strategy. His presentations have included programs such as Introduction to Divorce Law, 10 Things To Know Before Your First Divorce Trial, Pitfalls in Settling Divorce Cases, Financial Issues in Divorce, and How To Handle Difficult Divorces, among others.
